A Monet painting to be auctioned off in Tours

Saturday, March 20th 2021

Press Release

A 1882 painting by Claude Monet, entitled “Dieppe”, entrusted by a Japanese art-lover to be auctioned off in France announced auctioneers Philippe and Aymeric Rouillac at a press conference held at the Tours Fine Arts Museum on March 10, 2021.

The large (60 x 74 cm) canvas was painted in February 1882 while the artist, who was travelling through Normandy, was staying in Dieppe. It shows the entrance to the city with its main civil and religious buildings represented in a foggy halo. The harbor can be imagined in the background.

Exhibition at New York’s MoMA

"The fluid and lively touches in shades of blue are enhanced by green, yellow and red brushstrokes," analyze the auctioneers, who had the work scanned in 5D and shared the images on their website www.rouillac.com. "The results are simply stunning and the canvas is in a very good shape," they observed.

The painting had remained in the artist's family after his death. It was first unveiled to the public at the 1940 Monet Centennial Exhibition in Paris. It then remained in the United States for half a century, where it was exhibited at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and at the Los Angeles County Museum. Since the end of the 20th century, it has hung in the collections of Swiss and Japanese art-lovers.

"Although Monet is one of the greatest French painters, his paintings are hardly ever auctioned off in France," comments Aymeric Rouillac, who goes on: "Out of the four hundred and fifty paintings sold around the world since 2010, only fourteen of them, not counting fragments and small studies, have been sold in France. Usually, French collectors wishing to acquire such fine paintings have to travel to the United States or England. It is therefore a great opportunity for France".

His father Philippe Rouillac made headlines in 1999 when he auctioned off one of the most beautiful "Vue d'Étretat" paintings for sixteen million francs, a record-breaking amount at the time.

A price tag of one million Euros

As Monet's flagship painting "Impression au soleil levant" is returning from a triumphant tour around the world, particularly in China, the market for the master's works proves extremely strong, his paintings regularly breaking auction records.

This view of Dieppe will be auctioned off as part of the 33rd Garden Party organized by the Rouillac auctioneers on Sunday, June 6, 2021 at the Château d'Artigny in Touraine. Bidding will start at one million Euros. "Of course, we hope that it will be bought by a French art collector," said the Rouillacs, "but the competition is open...".
